Systems Engineer – UAS Airworthiness Certification

 

Position Summary:

The organization seeks a Systems Engineer with airworthiness certification experience to lead development, execution, and documentation of lost-link (command and control link loss) test plans in support of UAS airworthiness certification. This role owns the technical and procedural bridge between engineering design, safety analysis, flight test execution, and the certifying authority — ensuring lost-link behavior is fully characterized, tested, and defensible as certification evidence.

 

This is a lead/integrating role: the successful candidate will coordinate closely with RF/communications, flight test, software/autonomy, and system safety engineers, but will personally own the structure, traceability, and regulatory adequacy of the test plan itself.

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop a comprehensive lost-link test plan covering command and control (C2) link loss

   scenarios, including link degradation, complete link loss, and link recovery/re-acquisition

   conditions.

• Define test conditions required to validate lost-link behavior across the operational envelope.

• Translate certification basis requirements (e.g., FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate / COA

   criteria, MIL-HDBK-516 data requirements, or equivalent civil/military standards) into specific,

   testable requirements and pass/fail criteria.

• Coordinate with system safety engineering to ensure test points are traceable to hazard analysis

  (FMEA/FHA) findings for lost-link failure modes.

• Work with software/autonomy engineering to validate automated lost-link behaviors (e.g., hover,

   return-to-home, pre-planned orbit points, autonomous landing, flight termination).

• Partner with RF/communications engineering to incorporate link budget analysis and signal

  degradation modeling into realistic test scenarios.

• Support flight test engineering in translating the test plan into executable test cards, and

   participate in test point execution, data review, and anomaly resolution.

• Prepare test plan documentation, evidence packages, and reports suitable for submission to and

  approval by the certifying authority.

• Represent the test plan and results during witnessed test events and certification authority

   reviews.

• Maintain requirements traceability from certification basis through hazard analysis, test plan,

   execution, and evidence close-out.

 

 

Required Qualifications:

• US Citizen

• Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or

   related field (advanced degree preferred for senior-level candidates).

• Demonstrated experience with UAS or manned aircraft airworthiness certification processes.

• Working knowledge of applicable certification frameworks (e.g., FAA Part 21/91, COA processes,

   MIL-HDBK-516, EASA SC-VTOL/UAS regulations, or equivalent).

• Experience developing or contributing to flight test plans, including test point definition and

   success/failure criteria.

• Understanding of command and control (C2) link architecture and failure modes.

• Familiarity with system safety analysis methods (FMEA, FHA, or equivalent) as applied to flight-

   critical systems.

• Strong technical writing skills; ability to produce certification-grade documentation.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Direct experience authoring or executing lost-link test plans for a certified or certification-track

   UAS program.

• Experience interfacing directly with a certifying authority (FAA, EASA, DoD airworthiness

   authority, or equivalent) through review and approval cycles.

• Background in RF/communications engineering or systems integration involving datalinks.

• Experience with requirements management and traceability tools.

• Prior role as a flight test engineer, airworthiness engineer, or designated engineering

   representative (or equivalent).

Propulsion Airworthiness Systems Engineer – Hybrid UAS (Heavy Fuel Engine / Electric Lift)

 

Position Summary:

The organization seeks a Propulsion Airworthiness Systems Engineer to lead certification planning and technical integration across a hybrid propulsion architecture combining a heavy fuel engine (HFE) with electric lift motors. This is an integration and airworthiness-ownership role: the candidate will not necessarily be the deepest technical expert in either combustion or electric propulsion individually, but will own the combined certification basis, coordinate the specialist engineers on each side, and ensure the propulsion system as a whole — including failure modes where one propulsion path affects the other — is fully characterized, tested, and defensible as certification evidence.

 

Key Responsibilities:

·       Own the integrated propulsion certification basis, mapping applicable requirements from both combustion engine standards (e.g., 14 CFR Part 33, MIL-DTL-83133 fuel specifications, MIL-STD-810 environmental qualification) and electric/hybrid propulsion frameworks (e.g., relevant Special Conditions for Electric/Hybrid Propulsion Systems, ASTM F3239).

·       Coordinate the Heavy Fuel Engine propulsion engineer(s) and Electric Lift Motor propulsion engineer(s), integrating their individual test plans, reliability data, and safety analyses into a single propulsion certification package.

·       Lead hazard and failure mode analysis across the hybrid architecture, specifically addressing cross-system dependencies — e.g., whether loss of the heavy fuel engine leaves sufficient electric lift authority for safe recovery/landing, and vice versa.

·       Develop and own the propulsion system test plan, including endurance/reliability testing for the HFE, motor/controller/thermal qualification for the electric lift system, and combined-system failure mode testing.

·       Interface directly with the certifying authority (FAA, EASA, DoD airworthiness authority, or equivalent) to present the propulsion certification basis, test plans, and evidence packages, and to resolve technical findings.

·       Ensure fuel system certification (heavy fuel/diesel-type fuel compatibility, cold-start, altitude performance) and electric propulsion certification (battery/power electronics integration, motor controller reliability, thermal management) are each addressed to the appropriate standard, and that the combined system meets an equivalent level of safety where legacy standards don't directly apply.

·       Maintain requirements traceability from certification basis through hazard analysis, test plan, execution, and evidence close-out for the full propulsion system.

·       Represent propulsion airworthiness status in program-level design reviews and certification milestone reviews.

 

Required Qualifications:

·       US Citizen

·       Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (advanced degree preferred for senior-level candidates).

·       Demonstrated experience with aircraft or UAS propulsion system airworthiness certification.

·       Working knowledge of both combustion engine airworthiness standards (e.g., Part 33 or equivalent) and electric/hybrid propulsion certification frameworks or special conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

·       Direct experience certifying or supporting certification of a hybrid-electric or heavy-fuel-engine UAS or manned aircraft propulsion system.

·       Background in either heavy fuel engine qualification (fuel systems, altitude/cold-start performance) or electric propulsion (motor controllers, battery integration, thermal management), with working fluency in the other.

·       Experience with ASTM F3239 or equivalent electric propulsion standards, and/or MIL-DTL-83133/MIL-STD-810 for heavy fuel/military UAS programs.

·       Prior role leading a propulsion IPT (Integrated Product Team) or equivalent cross-functional propulsion group.

Position Summary:

The Human Factors Engineer serves as the technical authority for the design, evaluation, verification, and certification of the UAS Aircraft Control Station (ACS) human-machine interface (HMI). Position Summary:

The Systems Engineer – Airworthiness is responsible for developing, executing, and maintaining the airworthiness certification effort for an unmanned aircraft system (UAS). This includes requirements tailoring, compliance matrix development, and coordination across engineering disciplines and certification authorities to support flight release and type certification milestones.

 

This position reports to the Chief Systems Engineer or Airworthiness Lead. Coordinates regularly with subsystem Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), Test & Evaluation, System Safety/ESOH, and the government/service airworthiness authority.

Core Responsibilities:

     Develop and maintain the airworthiness compliance matrix (e.g., MIL-HDBK-516B criteria, or applicable civil/military airworthiness basis) mapping platform requirements to applicable standards and methods of compliance

     Tailor EMC/E3 requirements (MIL-STD-461/464) and other applicable specifications (MIL-STD-704, DO-160 if dual-use, structures, flight controls, software per DO-178C/DO-254 as applicable) to the specific platform configuration and mission profile

     Coordinate with subsystem leads (propulsion, avionics, communications/datalink, ground control station, payload integration) to ensure requirements flow down correctly and evidence is collected

     Interface with the certifying authority (service Airworthiness Authority, e.g., Army/Navy/Air Force TACC or MACC process) as the technical point of contact for the compliance package

     Manage requirements traceability (e.g., DOORS or similar RM tool) from airworthiness criteria through test evidence and closure

     Support test planning and witness/review ground and flight test campaigns tied to airworthiness closure items

     Identify and track risks/issues where subsystem-level compliance may not guarantee system-level compliance (e.g., equipment passing MIL-STD-461 individually but failing system-level MIL-STD-464 integration requirements)

     Prepare and present compliance status to program reviews and airworthiness boards

 

Required Qualifications:

     B.S. in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field (M.S. preferred)

•   US Citizenship

     5+ years systems engineering experience, ideally with 2+ years directly supporting an airworthiness, certification, or systems safety effort

     Working knowledge of MIL-STD-461/464 and how equipment-level and system-level EMC requirements interact

     Familiarity with MIL-HDBK-516B or equivalent airworthiness criteria framework

     Requirements management tool experience (DOORS, Cameo, or similar)

     Experience with technical compliance documentation for a DoD or FAA certification effort

     Active or eligible-for Secret clearance (Group III UAS programs are typically at minimum Secret; verify per specific program)

 

Preferred / Desirable:

     Direct UAS program experience (Group II–V)

     Exposure to DO-178C/DO-254 if the platform has any civil airspace integration requirements

     Experience supporting a formal airworthiness board or Flight Release process

     INCOSE CSEP or similar systems engineering certification

 

Pay Range: $160K - $210K

Structures Engineer - Airworthiness Certification

Position Summary:

The Structures Engineer – Airworthiness Certification is responsible for the structural substantiation and certification evidence supporting airworthiness of an unmanned aircraft system (UAS). This includes loads analysis, strength and fatigue/damage tolerance substantiation, structural dynamics, and coordination of static and fatigue test programs to satisfy the structures criteria.

Core Responsibilities:

     Develop and execute the structural certification plan, defining methods of compliance for each applicable structures criterion in the airworthiness compliance matrix

     Perform and/or oversee loads analysis (flight loads, ground loads, landing gear loads, gust/turbulence) to establish the structural design envelope

     Develop strength substantiation (static strength margins of safety) using analysis, test, or a combination, per the certification basis

     Develop fatigue and damage tolerance substantiation, including safe-life or damage-tolerant design approaches, to establish airframe service life and inspection intervals

     Plan, coordinate, and witness structural test programs (static test, fatigue test, ground vibration test/GVT) and correlate test results against analytical predictions

     Address structural dynamics requirements, including flutter/aeroelastic stability, vibration, and landing gear shimmy as applicable

     Coordinate with materials/processes, manufacturing, and quality engineering to substantiate critical material properties, key characteristics, and NDI accept/reject criteria

     Support weight and balance substantiation and its interaction with structural margins

     Maintain structural certification evidence packages and traceability (e.g., DOORS or similar RM tool) linking requirements, analysis, test evidence, and closure

     Interface with the certifying authority's structures technical area expert and support airworthiness board reviews for structures-related findings

     Support failure investigations and corrective action for structural anomalies discovered during test or fielded operation

Required Qualifications:

     B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (M.S. preferred)

•   US Citizenship

     5+ years structural engineering experience in aircraft or aerospace structures, ideally with 2+ years directly supporting airworthiness/structural certification

     Working knowledge of aircraft structural substantiation methods: static strength, fatigue and damage tolerance, structural dynamics/flutter

     Familiarity with MIL-HDBK-516B (or equivalent airworthiness criteria framework) and applicable structures specifications (e.g., MIL-A-8860 series, MIL-STD-1530 damage tolerance/durability requirements)

     Experience with structural analysis tools (e.g., NASTRAN, ANSYS, or equivalent FEA software)

     Experience supporting or interpreting static/fatigue structural test programs

     Requirements management tool experience (DOORS, Cameo, or similar)

 

Preferred / Desirable:

     Direct UAS program experience (Group II–V), particularly composite or hybrid metallic/composite airframe structures

     Experience with damage tolerance/durability analysis per MIL-STD-1530 or FAA-equivalent methods

     Experience with ground vibration testing (GVT) and flutter/aeroelastic analysis

     Experience supporting a formal airworthiness board or Flight Release process

     Professional Engineer (P.E.) license

 

Pay Range: $150K - $200K
